Bilbo’s Hospitality

Reflection – (12/Aug/2021)

Spoilers

It’s hard not to read through the opening of The Hobbit without smiling at Bilbo’s discomfort at the unexpected arrival of a throng of dwarves. Sudden as the visit may have been, Bilbo was mindful of his manners and made sure he welcomed each dwarf with politeness, good food and hearty drink. The only fault that could be laid at Mr Baggins’ round door is that he wasn’t entirely full of cheer. Can we really hold it against him? He did do his duty and made everyone most welcome indeed. We can hardly blame the little fellow for being flustered.

Our technology and lifestyles have brought us together in many ways, but in some they have pulled us further apart. It is much easier now to stay in touch with those far away, but it is also easier to detach oneself from physical human company. Dinner parties are an excellent way to connect with others. Sharing bread (and seed cakes, tea, beer, ale, porter, red wine, raspberry jam, apple tarts, mince pies, coffee, buttered scones, eggs, chicken, pickles –  you get the idea) is a time honoured way of forging and strengthening friendships.

No need to put on as big a spread as Bilbo either.  Anything or nothing will do, because it is keeping company which is the heart of it. Invite your friends round to play games or watch a movie. The message goes further still. Bilbo may have been stiff, but he was kind. There is no reason to be discourteous to strangers, and nothing to be lost by being welcoming and polite. Indeed, there may be much to be gained.
